The information search facing the Chinese Internet
The role of China is worth paying attention to the information in Chinese language, in order to have a better understanding of the evolution of the country.
It is then essential to develop a method of information search in Chinese and on the Chinese Internet. For that, we have to analyze sources of information, databases, social medial and media in mandarin. Because of censorship, the linguistic approach has to be mentioned, to identify the best key words.
This case study shows the main keys to search information facing the reality of the Chinese Internet.
Greenpeace facing a media trap
This case study is an extract from the second edition of the ‘Manuel d’intelligence économique’, published on August 2015, under the direction of Christian Harbulot.
Through the causes it supports (exclusively environmental claims), its means of actions (from lobbying to publicity stunt, always non-violent), its centralized organization and expertise, as well as its financial and political independence, Greenpeace is definitely a non-governmental organization (NGO) apart from the others.
But Greenpeace is facing a media constraint. As a matter of fact, the organization has the worry “to always preserve a historically decisive means: the image it conveys to its members, the general audience, and its political and economic representatives” . Yet, this quest to reputation leads to a pernicious media process. The need to constantly strengthen its image of an upright and responsible organization can cause some drifts, not really used by its opponents.
United States and Google: a coopetition of powers
Digital technologies draw a new geography of power, transcending traditional boundaries of Nations. Indeed, Edward Snowden’s revelations confirm to the world the extraordinary conquest methods used by the United States: massive and globalized espionage, in collaboration with Internet giants. A favorable context – and more than that, a certain ambition -, is at work in the United States for fifty years. It combines government, Defense complex, universities and industries.
Nevertheless, the Snowden affair has weakened the reputation and strength of this alliance, challenging the balance of power. In fact, American power is now to the test while private actors, like Google, are continuing their conquest with absolute power targets.
